…but how many dogs could fit on one bed? ( and there’s even a rabbit…!)
With all the space on this print I decided to introduce all the characters on the print and many more besides. Including my own dogs and my mum’s -living and sadly departed- as I think they all deserve a comfy spot on this imaginary bed. The room is inspired by visits to my old neighbour, Lilian, who lived in the basement of the first flat I ever bought. The wall paper was that shiny vinyl type, washable I’d think, in a dusky pink, nicotine stained with age ( Lilian and her late husband Dennis were lifelong smokers ). The carpet was a brownish burgundy and the cushions were embroidered with matching antimacassers on the chairs. Lilian was the inspiration for Violet, Mr Mustard’s wife. And her damp basement flat is in the same location as the Mustards’ imaginary abode. We lost touch when she moved to a nursing home but I often think of her. And what she’d think if she knew she’d been immortalized as Mrs Mustard. Lilian was in her late 80s when I last saw her, and I was in my 30s. As I’m feeling nostalgic it seemed fitting to include rainbow pets in this elaborate Remarque. One of whom is my own Sweetpea rabbit, dear friend of Moses dog. Sweetpea was feisty and fearless so I’ve drawn him challenging Mr Beagley for his cushion. He was a dwarf lop, lavender grey with one perky ear and a crooked smile. I miss him still.
I hope you enjoy these special little drawings. I think they really add life to the print. It’s certainly unique and full of love x
