I know it’s just one of the things people say, but personally I do put aside time sniffing roses. So many nowadays have no scent at all, so when I find one that smells like heaven I’m delighted. I can’t say they’re my favourites to look at, but when I see one of those blousy heads peeping over a garden wall I can’t resist. And if occasionally a little stem strays into my dog walking bag by way of my secret snippers, I always say a little thank you.
